Celebrities have a powerful influence on all those around them. We tend to follow their lifestyle, what they wear, where they eat, and whatever they do. They inspire us in so many ways. But, with great fame comes big responsibility! And many celebrities take that quite seriously, paving the way for environmental change with their round-the-clock efforts and investments.

Celebrities like Meryl Streep, Russell Simmons, and Brad Pitt have been promoting sustainable lifestyle, Veganism, fighting for climate change, and other environmental causes, for years.

1. Meryl Streep

This American actress, singer, and icon, who has a myriad of achievements in the acting world, is also an eco-foodie activist since the 1980s.

Meryl Streep has been a part of many campaigns and organizations, like Mothers & Others – a campaign whose mission is to make strict pesticide rules, that would protect the vulnerable from the harmful effects of pesticides.

2. Leonardo DiCaprio

If you’re a die-hard fan of the ‘Titanic’ leading man Leonardo DiCaprio, hold on; here’s another reason ‘your heart will go on‘ for him. The actor founded the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998. Since then, his foundation has supported global projects to reduce the risk of climate change, protect wildlife, and maintain ecological balance and harmony.

Apart from this, the actor invests in vegan companies like Beyond Meat and Califia Farms. He owns a solar panel residence in California and an apartment made of recycled materials; “Riverhouse.” The actor is all about living green, drives a hybrid car, and uses his own water treatment and air filters.

3. Mark Ruffalo

“The good news is we don’t need superhero strength to protect our planet,” wrote Ruffalo in an essay for Grist.org in 2015. This ecowarrior founded the clean water organization water defense in 2010 and has been actively vocal about his concerns over environmental issues.

He even hosted a ‘toxic tour’ to raise awareness about L.A.’s oil drilling sites.

4. Priyanka Chopra 

Apart from her acting prowess and big fan-base, this famous Indian actress is also loved for her work for various social causes, particularly with children. 

Priyanka Chopra is a youth icon, especially for girls, and is an ambassador of UNICEF goodwill. She is a part of UNICEF’s global campaign: “Girl Up” – on a mission to make the world a place where all girls, no matter where they belong, will have the opportunity to be educated, healthy, safe, counted, and positioned to be the next generation of leaders.

She has recently dropped a clean and sustainable hair care line Anomaly, – its product packaging is made with plastic from landfills and the ocean.  

5. Brad Pitt

The ‘Fight Club’ actor, Brad Pitt, known for his love of the environment, has made many contributions to conserve nature. He founded a non-profit organization: ‘Make It Right’ in 2008 to rebuild 150 energy-efficient and affordable homes for families in New Orleans, who lost their homes to Hurricane Katrina.

He, (along with Angelina Jolie) runs Maddox Jolie-Pitt Foundation, which is dedicated to providing support to the rural communities and helping protect endangered wildlife and forests. 

6. Natalie Portman

How could we not add the world’s most beautiful and famous vegan to the list? Natalie Portman has been a supporter of the vegan lifestyle for many years now. In 2008, she even launched a vegan shoe line in collaboration with Te Casan (the store closed up after a year, unfortunately).

She, along with Russell Simmons and Michael Bloomberg, has received an EMA Ongoing Commitment Award

7. Pierce Brosnan

The Irish actor and producer is famous for his role as the British secret agent, James Bond. Over the years, he has donated over $1million to various environmental organizations.

Brosnan has been a part of clean air and water campaigns, marine mammal, and wetland conservation. He has opposed projects like Cabrillo Port Liquefied Natural Gas facility that had a potential threat to the environment.

8. Gisele Bündchen

The famous Brazilian model, Gisele Bündchen, is also an environmental advocate. She has been a Global GoodWill ambassador for the UN’s Environment program.

Along with her family, she launched Projeto Água Limpa – a clean water project focusing on implementing sustainable, environmental management. In addition, she promotes the recovery of riparian vegetation.

9. Russell Simmons

The hip-hop mogul, Russell Simmons, is a hardcore vegan, devoted yogi, environmental activist, and advocates animal rights. He was the chairman of the board of the Foundation for Ethnic Understanding in 2002.

Russell Simmons was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador for the UN Slavery Memorial at the United Nations. He sponsors “America’s Greenest Campus,” which gives students an opportunity to win up to $20,000 by making their universities green. After Natalie Portman, he might be the most famous vegan here. 

10. Robert Redford

Founder of Sundance Film Festival and Oscar Award winner, Robert Redford has been actively doing his part for the planet, for years. He has been a long-time trustee with the Natural Resources Defence Council, a nonprofit organization. The organization’s mission is to preserve our planet’s natural resources and find clean energy solutions.

11. Edward Norton

A son of one of the great conservation strategists and activists, famous American actor and filmmaker Edward Norton, also works with the Masaai Wilderness Conservation Trust. The trust’s mission is to work on forest conservation through the trading of carbon credits. 

Norton also supports the African Wildlife Foundation and its campaign “Say No,” which fights against illegal poaching of elephants and rhinoceroses.

12. Daryl Hannah

Everyone loves her for her role as Madison in the 1984 romantic comedy ‘Splash’ and as the crazy villain in ‘Kill Bill.’ She is the founder of Sustainable Biodiesel Alliance (SBA) and has been actively protesting against environmental injustices.

She also has a website where she gives solutions and tips for living a green life. 

13. Shailene Woodley

The ‘Fault In Our Stars’ actress, Shailene Woodley, is so invested in living sustainably that she makes her own eco-friendly toothpaste, body lotion, face oils, and even her own medicines! 

In 2019, she teamed up with American Express, which is an initiative to help save water. With clean eating and making her own eco-friendly products, Woodley is a huge influence on the sustainable living movement.

“At the end of the day, corporations have the power to drive insane amounts of consumer change, and consumers have the power to drive corporate change,” Woodley told Architectural Digest.  

14. Channing Tatum

Magic Mike’s star, Channing Tatum, has worked with PlantMed, an organization that aims to draw attention to the destruction of the rainforest. PlantMed works with the peoples of the Amazon, which is the world’s epicenter for medicinal plants.

15. Jared Leto

This Golden Globe and Oscar-winning actor actively leads the fight against global warming. He is a global ambassador for the World Wide Fund For Nature. The fund is dedicated to fighting climate change.

For years, Leto has been a part of  The Nature Conservancy and Habitat for Humanity.
